What is Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once the implant fuses with the bone (osseointegration, taking 3 to 6 months), an abutment connector and a custom crown are attached on top. Implants look, feel and function like natural teeth, prevent jawbone deterioration, and can last a lifetime with proper care. They can replace a single tooth, support a bridge for several missing teeth, or anchor a full arch of teeth (All-on-4 or All-on-6). For pricing purposes the important thing is that one implant is three separately billed dental codes, not one charge: the implant body (D6010), the abutment (D6058) and the implant crown (D6065), each placed at a different appointment.

What Affects Dental Implant Cost?

  • Which practice you walk into, by far the biggest factor. The same national chain publishes $2,245 in Georgia and $4,049 in New York for identical work, a 1.8x spread inside one brand.
  • Whether the quote bundles all three codes. D6010 has a national cash median of $1,925, D6058 $700 and D6065 $1,310. A quote covering only the post looks 50 percent cheaper than one covering the finished tooth.
  • Add-ons billed separately: extraction D7140 (national median $175), bone graft for ridge preservation D7953 ($568), panoramic x-ray D0330 ($115), surgical guide D6190 ($262).
  • Abutment type: a prefabricated abutment (D6056, national median $525) against a custom milled one (D6059, $785). Custom is common on front teeth and worth asking about elsewhere.
  • Case scope: a single tooth against a full arch, where 127 chain locations publish a median of $19,900 per arch and independent centres publish $12,995 to $16,000.
  • Where you get it done: dental school clinic figures for the three implant codes sum to $1,973 and discount-plan figures to $2,906, against a $3,935 sum of national medians.

How to choose where to get Dental Implant

The cash-pay range on this page is $2,245-$6,533. Before you book, use these steps to find out which setting a quote comes from and what it includes.

Step by step

  1. Ask for a written treatment plan that lists each procedure with its dental procedure (CDT) code and price, so you can compare offices line by line.
  2. Ask whether the practice offers its own self-pay membership plan, and what it includes.
  3. Compare a dental school clinic. Dental schools often run clinics where supervised students provide care at a reduced cost. Source: NIDCR, finding dental care
  4. If your income is limited, check a federally funded community health center. Health centers offer a sliding fee discount based on your income and family size. Source: HRSA, find a health center
  5. Ask for a Good Faith Estimate. Dental providers are generally required to give one to uninsured and self-pay patients who schedule at least 3 business days ahead, or who ask. Source: CMS, medical bill rights
  6. Keep every estimate. If a provider or facility bills you at least $400 more than its Good Faith Estimate, you can start the federal patient-provider dispute process for a bill dated within the last 120 days. The fee is $25. Source: CMS, dispute a bill

How to Save on Dental Implant

1

Ask which CDT codes the quote covers, by number. "Does this include D6010, D6058 and D6065?" is the single question that makes two quotes comparable.

2

Get the extraction, bone graft and imaging quoted as separate line items with their codes, so a second office can price the same plan rather than a different one.

3

Call three offices. The published spread inside one national chain is $1,804 on the same procedure, so an hour of phone calls is the highest-return step here.

4

Check dental schools. The benchmark figures for the implant stack sum to $1,973 against a $3,935 sum of national medians, with supervised residents and longer appointments.

5

Ask whether the abutment is prefabricated or custom milled, and whether a surgical guide is genuinely needed for your case.

6

Compare the published price lists linked on this page against your written quote before you sign a treatment plan or a financing agreement.

What is actually inside an implant quote

One implant is not one charge. It is three separate dental codes billed at three separate appointments, usually months apart, plus whatever your case needs on top. A quote that looks cheap often prices only the first of the three. Ask which of these codes the number covers before you compare it to anything.

D6065Implant crownThe porcelain or ceramic tooth that goes on top. Placed months after the post.$750$1,310$2,500$1,168$658$968

Sum of the three national medians: $3,935. Adding the FAIR Health 50th percentile for each code instead gives $3,508. Adding the three lows gives $2,250 and the three highs $7,550.

These are sums of per-code figures, not an observed all-in price. Real bundled prices published by providers appear in the next section and run lower, because a practice that quotes one package price is not stacking three separate fees.

What dentists actually publish, location by location

Most implant pricing pages quote a range with no source. These figures come from a registry of prices that providers publish themselves, and every row links to the page the price appeared on. The headline finding is the gap between the only two national chains that publish anything: Affordable Dentures & Implants has a median of $2,715 across its 302 priced locations, while Aspen Dental publishes a national average of $4,259 for the same single tooth. Those are two different statistics, a median of real per-location prices against a chain-wide average, so treat the roughly $1,500 gap as an order of magnitude rather than a precise spread. It still points at the thing that matters most: what you are quoted depends more on which door you walk through than on your mouth.

Why nobody can tell you what insurance pays for an implant

For a knee MRI you can look up the exact rate your insurer negotiated, because federal price-transparency rules force medical insurers to publish every negotiated rate. Standalone dental plans are classified as excepted benefits and publish nothing. Our own corpus of insurer-negotiated rates parsed from carrier machine-readable files contains zero dental CDT codes, which is why this page prices cash and not coverage.

Medicaid: five jurisdictions price an implant at all

Across the 39 state Medicaid dental fee schedules we have compiled, only these list a rate for D6010, the implant body. Everywhere else, adult implants are not a covered benefit at any price. These are what the programme pays a dentist, not what you would pay.

What we can price instead of a coverage percentage

Rather than guess at a benefit design we cannot verify, the CDT table above carries three real alternative-price columns for every code in the implant stack. Summed across the post, abutment and crown:

A discount dental plan is a membership, not insurance: you pay a fee and get a reduced rate at participating dentists, with no annual maximum and no waiting period, but only in network. FairPass is a price-lookup membership and is neither.

Dental tourism: read the caveats

Information only. We do not recommend it.

Abroad, a single implant runs about $650 to $1,000 in Mexico and about $710 to $1,600 in Costa Rica. The trade-offs are real: less regulatory oversight, warranties that are hard to enforce from home, and limited access to follow-up or revision care if something goes wrong. Implants also take several visits over months, so count the return trips before treating a price gap as a saving. Vet the clinic credentials and materials carefully and plan for how complications would be handled.

Known limits of this data
  • The 302-location distribution is one national chain that competes on price. It is a well-evidenced floor and a genuine map of how much one brand varies by address. It is not a national market average, and this page does not present it as one.
  • Sinus lift. Codes D7951 and D7952 are not in our CDT benchmark table, so this page carries no sinus-lift price. It is a real and sometimes large add-on for upper-jaw cases. Ask your surgeon to quote it by code before you sign anything.
  • How often a bone graft is needed. We have a price for the ridge-preservation code D7953 but no dataset on what share of patients need grafting, so this page no longer states one.
  • Zirconia versus acrylic full arch as a national split. We have per-practice published prices for both, listed above, but not enough of them to publish a national range for either material.
  • Your own quote. Every figure here is either a national per-code benchmark or a price one named provider published. None of it is a quote, and none of it is a guarantee of what you will be charged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a single dental implant cost without insurance in 2026?

It depends far more on which practice you walk into than on your mouth. Across 302 Affordable Dentures & Implants locations in 39 states that publish a price, a single tooth implant with crown runs $2,245 to $4,049, with a median of $2,715 and 294 of the 302 locations under $3,000 (confirmed on their own price pages July 30, 2026). Aspen Dental publishes a national self-pay range of $3,158 to $6,533 with an average of $4,259 across about 1,100 offices (confirmed July 9, 2026). Priced code by code instead, the three CDT codes that make up one implant have national cash medians of $1,925 for the implant body (D6010), $700 for the abutment (D6058) and $1,310 for the crown (D6065), which sum to $3,935.

What is actually included in a dental implant quote?

Three separate dental codes billed at three separate appointments, usually spread over three to six months: D6010 the implant body, the titanium post placed in the jaw; D6058 the abutment, the connector; and D6065 the implant crown, the visible tooth. A quote that sounds unusually cheap frequently prices only the first of the three. Ask which of D6010, D6058 and D6065 the number covers, then ask separately about extraction (D7140, national median $175), bone graft for ridge preservation (D7953, national median $568), a panoramic x-ray (D0330, national median $115) and a surgical guide (D6190, national median $262).

How much does a full arch or All-on-4 dental implant cost?

Across 127 chain locations in 29 states publishing a price for an all-in-one full-arch solution, the range is $18,950 to $25,000 per arch with a median of $19,900 (confirmed July 30, 2026). Aspen Dental publishes $19,315 to $30,878 for full-mouth implants. Independent implant centres that publish per-arch prices sit lower: $12,995 in Fresno CA, $13,000 for an acrylic bridge and $16,000 for zirconia in New York NY, $14,990 in Fremont CA and $15,500 in Kennesaw GA. We do not have enough published prices to state a national range for acrylic or zirconia separately.

Does dental insurance cover dental implants?

Nobody can tell you precisely, and that is a structural problem rather than an oversight. Federal price-transparency rules force medical insurers to publish every negotiated rate, but standalone dental plans are classified as excepted benefits and publish nothing. Our own corpus of insurer-negotiated rates parsed from carrier machine-readable files contains zero dental CDT codes. On the public side, of the 39 state Medicaid dental fee schedules we have compiled, only five price the implant body D6010 at all: Kentucky $2,001.07, Massachusetts $1,151, New York $1,010, Washington DC $652.45 and Missouri $373.11. Everywhere else adult implants are not a covered benefit at any price. Ask your own plan for its implant clause and its annual maximum in writing before you assume a number.

What is the cheapest legitimate way to pay for a dental implant?

Three routes are priced in our data. A dental school clinic: the CDT benchmark table puts the implant body at $965, the abutment at $350 and the crown at $658, summing to $1,973, with supervised residents doing the work and longer appointments. A discount dental plan, which is a membership rather than insurance: the same three codes sum to $2,906. Or simply comparing published prices, where the lowest single published chain price in our registry is $2,245. The spread between the cheapest and dearest location of the same national chain is $1,804 on identical work, so calling three offices is the highest-return hour in this process.

Why do dental implant prices vary so much between offices?

Because dental pricing is unregulated and almost entirely unpublished, so there is no reference point pulling prices together. Our registry shows the same national chain charging $2,245 in Georgia and $4,049 in New York for the identical procedure, a 1.8x spread within one brand. Add different brands, whether the quote bundles the abutment and crown or bills them separately, whether an extraction or a bone graft is on the plan, and whether you see a general dentist or an oral surgeon, and two honest quotes for the same tooth can differ by thousands of dollars.

Is dental tourism (Mexico, Costa Rica) a safe way to save on implants?

Some people travel abroad for implants: a single implant runs about $650-$1,000 in Mexico and about $710-$1,600 in Costa Rica. We share this for information only and do not recommend it. Going abroad adds real risk: less regulatory oversight, warranties that are hard to enforce from home, and limited access to follow-up or revision care if something goes wrong. Implants also take several visits over months, so count the return trips before treating a price gap as a saving. If you consider it, vet the clinic credentials, sterilization and materials carefully, and plan for how complications would be handled locally.
